History of the South Charleston Christian Center

Present families in our congregation can trace their spiritual history back to the days of the tent revivals.  These spirit-filled meetings were held by Levi Jones, Frank Scovile, and Anna Uhlman in the early 1920s.  The tent revivals were held at our present location.  But during this time, the congregation felt a need to begin a church in the South Charleston area.

The first establishment for the South Charleston Pentecostal Church was a remodeled barn which was often referred to as the “Sheep Shed” by members of the congregation.  Although, in the eyes of man it was very crude and uncomfortable, the might power of God was continually being manifested to save, sanctify, fill those believers and to witness the miracles of healing that was being transpired by God in each service.

Evangelist Levi Jones often visited the South Charleston area to hold tent revivals.  He supported the works in the early stages by never held the position of pastor, as did Frank Scovile and Anna Uhlman.  The first pastor of the South Charleston Church was Rev.  Robert Wilcox.  Under his leadership the Church was then dedicated on November 25, 1925.

Throughout its history the South Charleston Pentecostal Church of Christ has been under the leadership and support of many fine leaders.  The list of pastors include: Quincy Sibole, Bro. Springgs, Josh Nickel, Elmer Smith, Orville Colgrove, George Belcher, Jason Palmer, Charles Call, Pearl Meadows, Edward Keaton, Harry Bailey, James Thompson, James Milton, L.T. Hayes, Thomas Bell, Ron Allen, M.C. Scott, and Danny Keaton.

In 1976, under the direction of Rev. Thomas Bell the church was reconstructed.  A new sanctuary was built and the church was remodeled by the members of the congregation.

As Paul reminded one of the early churches, he was the planter and Appolis watered the seed and it was God who gave the increase.  We feel that where we are now is because of God’s mighty power that was at work with out early founders.  With such a great foundation let us continue to build on that foundation that our heritage has given us.
